Beyond the Alps: Switzerland’s Locally-Rooted Travel
Beyond the Alps: Switzerland’s Evolving Travel Experience
Switzerland doesn’t beg for your attention—it quietly earns it. From its snow-covered peaks to its lakeside cities, it invites you in with the promise of postcard views, and keeps you with something deeper: a growing culture of connection, care, and curiosity. On a recent trip with friends, we set out not just to see Switzerland—but to experience it in a way that felt rooted, thoughtful, and fully in tune with its landscape.
We landed at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, a hub tucked into the crossroads of three countries—Switzerland, France, and Germany. It was a fitting start for a trip that would weave through diverse regions and quiet alpine towns, each one offering its own rhythm and story. With the keys to our tiny rental car in hand and no itinerary, we took off with a loose plan: drive, explore, and experience as much as we could—intentionally.
Basel: A Short, Sweet Start
Our first stop was Basel, where we had just enough time to explore the Christmas Market in the historic Old Town. The stalls glowed under twinkling lights, with handmade ornaments, fresh raclette, and mulled wine warming our hands (and spirits). What stood out was the quality of everything—nothing mass-produced, everything made with care. We chatted with artisans about their work and felt the sense of pride they had in keeping local traditions alive.
Though we didn’t stay long in Basel, it set the tone: Switzerland values its roots, and it invites travelers to slow down and notice the small, beautiful details. From there, we were off—into the mountains.
Lauterbrunnen: A Cabin in the Clouds
Arriving in Lauterbrunnen felt like stepping into a storybook. With our Airbnb perched high above the town and accessible only on foot, we hiked up a 20-minute trail in the dark, our phones lighting the way. When we finally reached the cabin, we were greeted by our unexpected house guest—a friendly woman from Germany, who had moved to Switzerland two years ago.
Over tea, she shared her recommendations for local adventures—paragliding, tobogganing, and hiking. With no set plans for the following day, we decided to take her lead.
The next morning, we woke to the first full view of the landscape: tall pines, steep cliffs, and a peaceful valley stretching below. The stillness was striking in its depth. The cabin itself was simple—wooden interiors, a small garden, and complete tranquility.
Hiking down into the valley, we discovered Staubbach Falls. The waterfall, one of the highest in Switzerland, cascades dramatically down the cliffside, its water plunging nearly 300 meters. Standing there, surrounded by the roar of water and the silence of the valley, it felt as though time had momentarily stopped.
Lauterbrunnen’s charm lies in its simplicity—no crowds, no distractions—just pure, unspoiled nature. It’s a place where time slows, allowing for a deeper connection to the land, to each other, and to the present moment.
Interlaken: Adventure That Lifts You
The drive from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken is short—just under 30 minutes—but it feels like a journey between worlds. We wound through lush valleys, past cliffs and alongside the glassy blue of the Lütschine River. As the road opened up, the mountains pulled back just enough to reveal Interlaken—tucked like a secret between the twin lakes of Thun and Brienz.
We came for adventure, and Interlaken delivered immediately.
First up: paragliding. We booked with Paragliding Interlaken, and even getting to the launch site was a thrill. The shuttle climbed out of town and zigzagged up into the hills, past grazing cows and quiet chalets with flower-filled balconies. The higher we went, the quieter it got—until it was just us, the wind, and a sliver of trail pointing toward the sky.
And then we ran. A few steps and we were off the mountain, rising into the air. For nearly 20 minutes, we floated. No engine. No rush. Just us above the world—lakes glimmering below, peaks surrounding us, and a kind of silence you don’t forget. Paragliding wasn’t just a thrill. It was clarity. It was a reminder of how good it feels to let go and trust the ride.
Still riding the high, we made our way to the Harder Kulm Funicular, which whisked us up to one of the best views in Switzerland. At over 4,300 feet, the platform offered a full sweep of Interlaken, both lakes stretching out like mirrors, the mountains beyond layered in shades of blue and green. It was the kind of view that stops conversation—and invites reflection.
After a day of adventure, we sought comfort at Velo Cafe, a charming café known for its locally sourced, organic meals. The warm ambiance and delicious food made it the perfect place to recharge. We wandered in Funky Chocolate Club, lured by the rich scent drifting onto the street. This playful shop offers hands-on chocolate-making workshops, where you learn about cocoa, tempering, and craft your own bars with help from passionate chocolatiers.
To end the day, we indulged in Swiss specialties at Hotel Krebs, where we savored a hearty meal of traditional cheese fondue, served with fresh bread, pears, pickles, and potatoes. Dining here felt like a true Swiss experience—local ingredients, authentic flavors, and an atmosphere that made you feel connected to the country.
Lucerne: A Quiet City with Sustainable Charm
Our final stop was Lucerne, a city known for its lakeside beauty and historic old town. We stayed in an apartment that offered the perfect blend of modern comfort and sustainable design. The home, located near the lake, was bathed in natural light, with large windows that framed views of the surrounding mountains. It was a retreat within the city, giving us a peaceful base from which to explore.
We spent our day exploring cobbled streets along Lake Lucerne, soaking in the charm of its medieval architecture. We admired the Chapel Bridge, Court Church of St. Leodegar and the mesmerizing blend of history and culture.
For a delightful lunch, we stopped by Bahnhofli Urban Food Station, a trendy yet laid-back café offering a menu focused on fine, down-to-earth, and modern dishes for every taste—including gourmet burgers made from first-class Swiss Prime Beef. The food was fresh and full of flavor, and we left feeling not just full, but fulfilled, knowing we’d supported a business that prioritized truly homemade and local ingredients.
Our time in Lucerne also included a spontaneous discovery of the town’s winter ice skating rink, set against the backdrop of the city’s Christmas lights. As we glided across the ice, it was impossible not to appreciate how the city had blended modernity with tradition, offering an experience that felt both timeless and responsible.
Switzerland’s Invitation to Experience More
As we wrapped up our time in Switzerland, it was clear that the country has quietly redefined what travel can be. It isn’t just about visiting iconic landmarks or checking off a list of experiences. It’s about finding moments to connect—to nature, to culture, and to the people who call this place home.
Whether it was exploring the natural beauty of Lauterbrunnen, soaring over the lakes in Interlaken, or savoring a quiet meal in Lucerne, Switzerland’s charm lies in its ability to make travelers feel like part of its story. Each experience was crafted with care, offering a unique perspective on what it means to travel with intention. The country’s commitment to preserving its landscapes, while welcoming visitors to explore in a meaningful way, offers a roadmap for future tourism—one where connection and respect go hand in hand with adventure.
